Earlier this week, the archdiocese was made aware that Fr. Nino Cavoto, currently pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Etobicoke, has been accused of abuse against a minor.

In 1977, Fr. Cavoto was ordained as a priest for a religious order, the Salesians of Don Bosco. The allegation dates back to Fr. Cavoto’s ministry in a parish in the Archdiocese of New York, where he served between 1979 and 1983.

As the allegation relates to ministry in another jurisdiction, the Salesians and Archdiocese of New York are responding to the complainant and local civil authorities. There have been no allegations of misconduct against Fr. Cavoto during his ministry in the Archdiocese of Toronto nor were there any prior to his arrival here in 1983.

Following our procedure relating to allegations of misconduct, the Archdiocese of Toronto has removed Fr. Cavoto from ministry pending the investigation. He is entitled to due process, as is any accused individual.

Fr. Chris Cauchi has been appointed as administrator of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish.

The Archdiocese of Toronto looks upon any allegation of misconduct as an urgent matter that requires serious attention. Our full “Procedure for Cases of Alleged Misconduct” policy can be accessed by visiting: www.archtoronto.org/safe-environment.

We pray for all those who are impacted by this painful situation.
